Although Swamp Milkweed is a moisture-loving perennial, this plant does just fine in regular garden settings and spreads much less than Common Milkweed. â
Like Common Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed is a host plant to the Monarch Butterfly, meaning that it is the only food that the monarch caterpillar will eat. Swamp milkweed also provides nectar to native bees, wasps, and hummingbirds, and uses its fibrous roots to filter nutrients from stormwater runoff.
These seedlings are from seeds from the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library and purchased from Northern Wildflowers. Some seeds are harvested from my own Swamp Milkweed, which came from the OWSL.
